Why Own A Ranch/Why Invest So Much?
Why? It’s the question that echoes every time someone looks at the sprawling lands of the West and wonders why we’ve chosen this life.
Why do we own a ranch? Why invest so much into a piece of dirt, into a life so seemingly detached from the comforts and conveniences of the modern world?
Here’s the answer: Freedom
Freedom
We don’t like being told what to do. We’re the captains of our own ships, charting a course that stays true to who we are. In a society that seems hell-bent on conformity, where individuality is stifled and the voices of the strong and independent are drowned out, we refuse to bend.
The ranching life is not just a lifestyle; it’s a declaration that we will not be boxed in by a system designed to suppress the very essence of who we were created to be.
There’s a narrative out there, one that says we should trade our wide-open spaces for cramped city blocks, our sweat and callouses for the glow of a screen, and our God-given rights for convenience.
But here in the West, we’re not buying it.
Worth
We hunt. We fish. We breathe mountain air so crisp and clean it reminds us what it means to truly live. We fix our own fences, ride our own horses, and grow our own food.
We’re raising the next generation to understand what it means to work for what they have, to respect the land, and to stand tall as men and women who know their worth.
There’s a spiritual connection to this way of life. Genesis 2:7 tells us, “Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” That dust, that breath, is here in the West, where the land speaks to us in ways the city never could.
We don’t want honking horns, smog, or cookie-cutter houses. We don’t need prepackaged meals or temperature-controlled seats. What we need is to hear the wind in the pines, to feel the lope of a horse beneath us, to catch the scent of sagebrush after a rainstorm.
Even the musk of elk in the fall is a reminder of freedom—a life unbridled and untamed.
Purpose
The ranch life is not easy. It’s not supposed to be. It’s long days of bucking hay, repairing equipment, and pushing ourselves to the limit. But that’s the point. Stressing our bodies, stretching our minds, and connecting with the land – this is how we find our purpose.
America was built on the backs of men and women who refused to settle for less, who saw the potential in this land and fought for it. Ranching is an extension of that spirit, a continuation of a legacy that values independence, strength, and self-reliance.
Preservation
This life is an investment – not just in land or livestock but in the soul.
It’s about remembering where we came from and ensuring we don’t forget it. It’s about preserving a way of life that speaks to the deepest parts of who we are.
Out here, we’re not just living; we’re thriving. This is the West. This is freedom. And this is why we’ll never give it up.
