How has your career experience in the Land Industry prepared you for your role as the RLI President?

My Journey Into the Land Industry

My path to this point in my life has been shaped by decades of diverse experiences across various sectors. Unlike many, I entered the land industry in a rather unconventional way—through my passion for hunting , wildlife and and conservation.

Early Involvement in Wildlife Management

My journey began with an overall love of the outdoors, professional guiding and world travel. I was honored to be appointed by the Governor of Colorado to serve on the advisory committee to the Wildlife Commission, specifically for the big license allocation project. This role eventually led to a decade-long position on the advisory board to the Wildlife Commission.

During this time, I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of responsible management, caring for our wildlife, maintaining healthy herds, and managing age class and sex ratios. I came to realize that our responsibilities extend far beyond simply selling more hunting licenses or boosting local economies through tourism.

We have a duty to ensure the sustainability of wildlife populations, rather than just taking advantage of resources that cannot support excessive demand.

“We really do have a bigger responsibility than just coming in and going hunting every year, taking advantage of game that can’t support the number of tags that are issued… no matter what the sustainability of the herd is!”

A Conservation-Minded Perspective

This experience gave me a perspective on land that differs from many others in the industry. While some enter land real estate from residential backgrounds, aspiring to participate in larger deals, my approach has always been rooted in conservation. With a clear balance of how do we protect the assets that we have?

I have always asked:

  • How do we protect and improve the assets we have?
  • How do we move forward responsibly?
  • How can we create opportunities that are both profitable and ethical?

“My goal has always been to wear the white hat, to do the right thing and leave a lasting, positive impact that goes beyond simply closing deals”

Did you know that the very first ranch I ever sold is now in conserved today? I had the privilege of working with an exceptional client who truly understood the importance of long-term, legacy ownership.

To this day, the family continues to steward this remarkable property; 1,300 acres and 2 miles of river in Hinsdale, Gunnison County. The fact that this land is forever protected is a powerful testament to the enduring value of thoughtful stewardship and conservation.

That early experience profoundly influenced me. It shaped not only how I began my career in land brokerage, but also my core philosophy as a land professional.

“Our work is about more than transactions, it’s about creating lasting legacies for generations to come”

Field Experience Across the West

As my career progressed, I became involved in owning Professional Guide Services across the Western United States, positioning us at the top of the industry in four different states; Colorado, Texas, Montana, and Alaska.

My hands-on experience is unique: I spent over 100 nights a year in a sleeping bag for 20 years, truly living and working in the field. This background sets me apart from those who simply obtained a real estate license and started selling land.

“My foundation is built on a deep respect for the land and a commitment to responsible stewardship”

Living the Land

We didn’t just work the land… we lived on it. Owning ranches gave us firsthand insight into the importance of stream restoration, habitat enhancement, and maintaining a balanced perspective on land management. We understood the value of conservation easements and recognized the significant impact of 1031 exchanges on rural America.

It’s also important to note that we understood that 80% of the wildlife in the Mountain West lives and winters on private land. This means that regulations, rules, and development decisions everything from habitat projects to water rights and mineral management have a profound effect on the quality of life.

Not just for the land owner, not just for the wildlife but for us as Land Brokers, all benefiting the entire ecosystem.

The Value of Education and Professionalism

For me, organizations like RLI (Realtors Land Institute) also depicted that concern, and embodied the commitment to: learning, knowledge, improvement, and gaining new perspectives. They offer the opportunity to become better informed and more effective in our transactions:

  • Buyers are better educated about their investments
  • Sellers achieve the highest and best use of their Land
  • The land itself is managed for long-term Value and Sustainability

Sustainability and Stewardship

While many are drawn by the prospect of making money, and that is definitely part of our conversations, but I was motivated by a desire to move away from simply being a user of resources.

I wanted to stop being “the guy that’s killing everything when there isn’t enough to go around”, my perspective was very very different and shaped by a genuine concern for sustainability and stewardship.

I’m always asking:

  • How can we use common sense and long-term planning to improve, conservation, river restoration, and habitat improvement to not only enhance the land, but also increase its value?
  • How do we make sure our actions today create a lasting positive impact?
  • Alongside: How do we ensure a return on investment while reaching the goals of our buyers?

What excites you the most about M4 Ranch Group, its future and the Land/Real Estate Industry?

Small but Mighty

What excites me most is the national presence M4 Ranch Group has built up at a national level, alongside the strength and passion of our team.

I always look at our team and I think, God we may be small, but we are truly mighty. Our track record speaks volumes, consistently ranking among the top producers in the Western United States. With multiple team members recognized as top agents nationally…those numbers and accolades are truly impressive. But for me, the real story goes far beyond the statistics.

Passion and Dedication Beyond the Numbers

I think the bigger picture is the true value ad M4 has brought on the entire front; our relentless commitment to land, wildlife, and long term stewardship opportunities.

There is no question that we are genuinely addicted to what we do, whether it’s jumping into airplanes to survey mountain properties or driving hundreds of miles in a day to list a ranch.

For example; today I’m driving 700 miles after a board meeting to meet a client and list their property, while Seth is on his way to South Dakota. That’s just a typical day for us, this isn’t a job you do unless you have a deep passion for it, and for us, it’s an absolute blast.

“There is no question that we are genuinely addicted to what we do”

More Than Just a Business

As Seth Craft often says; “we’d probably do this even if we didn’t get paid a dime”.

Of course, we’re fortunate to enjoy the rewards that come from decades of hard work, building a loyal client base, an industry leading reputation, and a top-tier marketing team that has elevated M4 to a whole new level.

Our network includes financially strong buyers who have truly prospered by working with us (“we have made them a ton of money”), because we truly understand land value and how to spot opportunities and potential most miss.

Creating Value and Lasting Legacies

The ranches we help transform are like tricked out muscle cars, many people dream of owning one, but few have the time or expertise to bring them to their full potential. That’s where we come in. We bridge the gap, delivering fully realized properties to buyers whose time is often more valuable than their money.

Impact, Integrity, and Industry Leadership

We’ve grown into a company that has improved wildlife habitats on hundreds of thousands of acres. Our work has included building a premier bison herd with the Navajo Nation and protecting elk hunting ranches at an extraordinary scale. Alongside conserving miles and miles of Western rivers and landscapes.

The improvements we’ve made to both herds and habitat have been remarkable. It’s incredibly rewarding to look back and realize, “We did that.” When someone calls to say how incredible Wolf Springs Ranch is, I’m proud to say, “Yes, we put that together.”

The Aught 6 Ranch is another example, what started as a modest investment is now on the market for $128 million. Being part of that journey and helping clients realize significant gains is a lot of fun and deeply satisfying.

“Our impact is measured not just in sales, but in the lasting legacies we help create and the land we help protect for future generations”

Professional Community and Accountability

The excitement between both RLI (Realtors Land Institute) and M4 Ranch Group is deeply intertwined, representing the best of our industry.

I was recently at a Colorado RLI meeting, over 100 Colorado RLI members gathered, sharing properties and representing $1 billion in active buyer interest. It’s inspiring to sit among professionals who are committed to excellence, accountability and striving to be better…In that room, your reputation matters:

How you treat your colleagues, your clients, how you represent a property, how well you represent every detail of a property, from easements, access, minerals to water rights, have you done your homework, did you dive into the data, do you know what your representing, are you representing it well… and much more.

Setting Higher Standards

True professionalism in land brokerage means understanding what you’re selling, counselling clients with integrity, understanding what their end goals are and always striving to be better.

“Be honest about what you’re representing and who you’re talking to… have integrity”

Too often, the industry suffers from agents who don’t do the work, just putting a lockbox on a property and sending an MLS link. That’s not how we operate, and it’s why issues like the current broker compensation lawsuit exist. To earn the opportunities and compensation at the highest level, you have to do the work, stand up and be there, stay educated, and always seek the right answers…”earn your money”.

Leadership and National Impact

That’s why I’ve invested so much in RLI, serving as past Colorado Chapter president and now as national president for all the land brokers across the nation. RLI is the voice of land in the United States of America, a responsibility I take very seriously.

I get to stand on the shoulders of the men and women that have run this organization in the past, that have done such a remarkable job. I have the honor of being in that same group of people that have done great things, to shape the future, protect landowner rights, and make a national impact even at the Supreme Court level.

“It’s an honor to stand alongside the men and women who have built this organization, to be the voice of land and help lead it into the next era”

Teamwork and Excellence

At M4, we work hard to support each other, leveraging our strengths, and remaining diligent and responsible in all we do. This commitment has elevated our team and propelled M4 to new heights.

RLI is on a similar trajectory, thanks to an outstanding executive committee and a remarkable team of women leaders. I’m proud to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry, both at M4 and RLI…without these dedicated individuals, neither organization would be what it is today.

The Collective “We”

What I really appreciate about both RLI and M4 is that it’s never just about me, it’s always about the collective “we.” M4 doesn’t succeed because of my leadership alone; it thrives on the ideas and individuality of every team member.

The same goes for RLI, it isn’t driven solely by my perspective or ideals, but by the combined efforts of an outstanding group of people who are truly exceptional at what they do. Whether it’s me, Aubrey, Jeff Hurdle, Matt Davis, or anyone else, everyone’s voice is valued and heard. That’s what makes this so rewarding: being part of a team where everyone is a leader in their own right, and together, we accomplish great things and kick ass.

Dan’s vision for the future is one where integrity, education, and a genuine respect for the land drive every decision. As Dan steps forward to lead on a national stage, his dedication to building legacies for clients, for the land, and for the industry continues to inspire those around him.
